BRIEF HISTORY OF

ACADEMIA DE LA NUESTRA SRA. DE LA PAZ
PAX ACADEMY
PAX JUNIOR COLLEGE
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE-LA CARLOTA
AND
PAX CATHOLIC ACADEMY DIOCESE OF BACOLOD, Inc.

1934 - Rev. Fr. Santiago Vilda, OAR, parish priest of Our Lady of Peace requested the sisters of Hijas de Jesus[FI] (Spanish nuns who had just arrived in the Philippines barely 3 years) stationed in Iloilo to open a school for La Carlota. This request was approved by the bishop of Jaro, Rev. Msgr. James McCloskey and likewise approved by the superior general of the congregation.

1935 - first group of FI sisters arrived in La Carlota and they immediately opened the school which is then the parish convent of La Carlota. The school was then named ACADEMIA DE NUESTRA. SRA. DE LA PAZ, in honor of the patroness of the place. The school was a co-ed one. Catechism was the main focus of the instruction.

1941 - Early months of this year, an unexpected visit of the Mother General of the congregation brought despair to the nuns who had been serving the school. They were notified that they will have to leave their mission in La Carlota to give way to a bigger missionary work in Manila. Bishop Casimiro Lladoc, the first bishop of the diocese of Negros was informed about the plan. He approached the Augustianian Sisters the offer to continue the school in La Carlota. An agreement was contracted between the Diocese of Bacolod and the OSA in the use of the property of the Bishop. Among those agreed upon is for the congregation to give the Diocese one peso (1.00 php) annual as share for the use of her property.

June 1941, the Augustinian sisters began their missionary work for La Carlota. With 97 grade school enrollees the school had operated with the following sisters administering the parochial school namely,: the late Sor Consejo de Divini Amor, OSA, Sor Maria Ambrosia, OSA, Sor Bonifacia de San Augustine, OSA.
The outbreak of World War II in December 1941 had forced the school to close her operation. The school was abandoned and the sisters went back to Bacolod.

1946 - After the liberation from war, the school opened again. However, her name was changed by the order of Bishop Lladoc to that of Pax Academy (Peace Academy). This is to honor the period of peace after the almost four long years of war and the Japanese occupation of the Philippine island. New set of sisters were sent to administer the school until 1948.

1948 - secondary program exclusively for girls opened for Pax Academy.

1949 - Complete government recognition for all elementary program was granted to the school in February 24, 1949. 16 pupils were recognized as the first graduates of the school in March 1949.

1951 - complete government recognition for the secondary course was approved for the school. First graduates for the secondary level was made this year with only 6 students. New set of sisters came in to administer namely,: Mo. Maria Carmen, OSA, Sis. Jacobita de San Agustin, OSA.

1952 - the second graduates in the high school department shows an increase in number to that off 22 students.

1964 -1965 - The school opened the one-year secretarial course. This time the name of the school was changed to Pax Junior College.

1966 - 1967 - New set of sisters came. The school was directed by Sister Assumpta Hormillosa, OSA with other sisters. The first group of high school boys graduated from the school. The second year of the commerce department of the college was granted the government recognition.

1967 - the old building near the parish was demolished. A semi-concrete building had been replaced for it.
The succeeding years paved way for greater improvements for the school under the directorship of Sis. Assumpta, OSA. In her terms, she was able to construct 3 new school buildings at the parish plaza area. The complete commerce program was recognized by the government and it was sometime in 1969 when the nomenclature changed to La Consolacion College-La Carlota City.

1970 - 1971 - New set of sisters came with Sis. Violeta Marcos, OSA as directress/College Dean. She was accompanied with other OSA sisters. It was this year when the school experienced financial hardships. However, all of the hardships were overcame in the course of time. The congregation and the lay had worked together only to put the school in place and to continue her operation. The usufruct contract between the OSA and the Diocese of Bacolod was changed to only five (5) year contract, subject for renewal upon the agreement of both parties.

1980’s - God’s providence was seen working in La Carlota and for the school. The God of the harvest had provided the school new college building and other edifices for the comfort of the students and better services.
Blessings after blessings were showered to the school. Needless to say there were moments also of difficulties, yet giving up was not the option rather trusting the Lord who made and have planned everything for the school was all the reason.
March 2009 - The Augustinian sister of Our Lady of Consolation turned over the administration of the school to the Diocese of Bacolod.
Prior to the turn-over, the Diocese had applied for a new juridical identity with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for its new name the PAX CATHOLIC ACADEMY DIOCESE OF BACOLOD,INC.
The SEC Certificate was granted in December 2008 on the other hand, with the Department of Education permit and recognition status were worked out as well for the operation of the Basic Education department of the school (pre-school – high school). In 2009 the permit and recognition status for the complete basic education was granted to the school by the department of education. Up to the present, the school is under the administration of the Diocese of Bacolod.

It was the Diocese who initiated the foundation of this school. It will remain a commitment of the Church in Bacolod to continue what has been started and will try to improve it in the course of time. Hardships may come along it, but trusting in the Divine Teacher, we will overcome trials. It is our thrust that Catholic education will continue for the people of La Carlota. It is our mission to form men and women who are intellectually competent but above all, men and women of faith and discipline in life, so that when their time comes, they become men and women for others and trusted stewards of God’s creation.
